Dense Bread

Matthew 16:5-12

I have a bread maker at home (no, not just my wife). I don't use it as often as I would like. I've got a couple of recipes I like to use. Bread can be finicky. One time, my wife unplugged the machine part way through. By the time I realized, it was too late. I turned it back on, but it didn't turn out. There was another time when I forgot the yeast. I didn't realize this until I saw the brick that had baked in the bottom of the pan. I just wasn't paying attention well enough. I overlooked the obvious.
When Jesus starts talking about the yeast of the Pharisees and the Sadducees, I think they overlook the obvious. They start thinking about bread, but He didn't mention anything about bread. He reminds them of the feeding of the 5,000 and 4,000. They should have thought of that, too. But how quickly we forget the important things. One of the most important parts of baking bread is the yeast. If I had forgotten the honey, I never would have noticed. Repeatedly, the disciples overlook the things that Jesus has already done when they are faced with new teachings. In my walk with God, I overlook lots of things that He has said and done, and when I come to a new challenge, I am at a loss. Perhaps I should stop and think of what He has already done, and that would help me to see what He is about to do.
