Whether or not a shepherd would actually do what is described in this passage (I think I've heard it both ways), the idea is the same. You are important enough that God will drop everything He is doing (which is probably quite a lot) in order to track you down and return you to Himself. Isn't that amazing. Don't ever think you're not worth much. You are worth everything to the one who made you.
I didn't realize until just now, but this is the final answer to the disciples' question at the beginning of the chapter. "Who is the most important?"
